“We’re still in the very early phases of our investigative process so not a lot of information for right now,”  Avon Police Department PIO Brian Nugent said. I can confirm that we do have 11accident vehicles here at the intersection.

“One of those vehicles was a dump truck that was involved; we believe might’ve been the primary cause of the accident however that’s just the initial information we received from several witnesses and the victims driving vehicles that were actually involved in the accident so unfortunately we do have two individuals died.” APD did not release the names of the deceased.

Nugent said an Avon School Corporation bus was also involved in the accident and the bus driver was not injured – the bus sustained minor damage; the last three children on the bus were dropped off before the accident. ASC issued a text to parents at 3:45 stating that accident occurred.

Pat Gueiren, Indianapolis, witnessed the accident. “We (were) heading east back to Indianapolis after our carpet install. We saw the dump truck swerving between the fast, slow and emergency lanes. When my boss was able to get around, I yelled to him to choose a lane. He was gazing forward not at acknowledging or replying to us. His eyes were fixed forward.” The driver, Michael Bonavita, Indianapolis, said, “I looked in my review mirror and yelled he’s not going to stop, he’s not going to stop!”

Nugent said that APD was assisted by Indiana State Police, Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department and well as surrounding fire and rescue service personnel.

This is a developing story.
