Kiwanis International works to improve the lives of children one community at a time, and Plainfield Chamber of Commerce member Scott Stein came up with a new way for the local club to raise funds and give back in 2020.

“I ride a Harley, and I do a lot of rides throughout the year already to support different agencies and organizations,” he said. “I thought it would be nice if we could do a ride for kids in Hendricks County and raise money that way.”

The Plainfield Kiwanis Club is holding a Ride 4 Kids from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Avon American Legion.

Stein has been a member for nearly three years, and is spearheading the event after speaking with fellow member, Lori Hiatt. They formed a committee, and the event was in the works.

“The committee has been so strong and put a lot of effort into this and volunteered a lot of time,” Stein said. “I’m a corporate sponsor, and we have probably a good 40 hours invested. Jack’s Donuts, Brain Balance, Marketing Pro Lab and Lori all probably have at least 40 hours invested in this by this point as well.”

Stein said the event is going to make all the hours that have been volunteered worth it.

“With COVID-19 all the schools got cut short last year,” he said. “The kids are going to need help. Let’s take a couple hundred dollars and buy them groceries or new shoes. We want to be able to take as much money as we can and spread it throughout different organizations versus just tying it up into one need.”

The event will also feature music, raffles, a 50/50 drawing and food along with the ride that’s designed for vehicles of all types, not just motorcycles.

“If you don’t ride, and you just want to come and hang out and help the kids in our community that’s great, too,” he said. “We’re going to raise as much money as we can for the kids. Just stop by. You don’t have to commit to the whole day. Meet some of the owners of your local businesses.”
