A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, December 3 for Dr. Dean Maar. The 61-year-old orthopedic surgeon was shot and killed during a home invasion at his house near Brownsburg the day before Thanksgiving. As loved ones mourn the sudden loss, detectives are working to find suspects.

“Investigators believe there was more than one suspect involved in the home invasion which left Dr. Maar dead,” said Captain Amanda Goings with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office.

“The focus of our investigation is to evaluate all of the evidence that was recovered from the scene and bring Dr. Maar’s killers to justice.”

Investigators with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary report on November 27 around 6:15 p.m. at Maar’s home located in the 5000 block of North CR 1000 East.

According to police, Dr. Dean Maar was dead when officers arrived. It also appeared a small fire had been intentionally set inside the home but was put out by first responders. There are no suspects in custody.

According to Dr. Maar’s obituary, he was preparing to host a large Thanksgiving dinner with extended family when he was a victim of a home invasion. It says he died defending his wife who was home at the time.

“He confronted the armed attackers and sacrificed his life to save the Love of His Life,” the obituary states.

Dr. Maar leaves behind a wife and three daughters. He is remembered as a dedicated surgeon, father, and husband who loved to be outdoors with his family.

Dr. Maar was a well-respected surgeon at OrthoIndy and specialized in knee replacements.

Friends, family, and co-workers, and former patients have been sharing their thoughts and prayers online.

“I worked with Dr. Maar in core 2 for 5 years. I remember him fondly as a dedicated surgeon and loving man. He had an easy laugh…likable in every way. A wonderful teacher and modest about his skill set. He is a great loss to the community,” writes Yasmin Kapadia.

“I had a head-on collision back in 1995 and thank God there was a doctor there who saved my leg,” said Richard Buzbee.

Dr. Tim Dicke, president and CEO of OrthoIndy, issued this statement:

“Dr. Dean Maar has been a cornerstone of OrthoIndy as a previous board member and former vice president and was instrumental to the development of our renowned trauma program. He will be remembered for his integrity in all aspects of his patient care and contributions to the practice.”

Dr. Maar was a graduate of DePauw University and Indiana University School of Medicine.

A Celebration of Life will be held 4-8 p.m., on Tuesday, December 3 at Crown Hill Funeral Home in Indianapolis. A private burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery.
