Hendricks County Tox-Away Days returns Saturday

By Lindsay Doty

For Hendricks County residents who have been decluttering their homes and garages during weeks of quarantine, the return of Tox-Away Days in Hendricks County will offer some safe options for tossing the stuff that shouldn’t go in the trash, including old medications and pesticides.

The Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District will host its first Tox-Away Day event for 2020 on Saturday, May 16 at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville (1900 East Main Street ) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s a chance for residents to properly recycle or dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW), tires, electronics & appliances.

Since the last event in April had to be postponed, organizers expect a bigger crowd.

“We do expect Tox-Away Day to be very busy since it is the first of 2020 and people have been at home and cleaning,” said Lenn Detwiler, executive director of Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District.

Drivers are asked to enter at Main Street and remain in their vehicle as usual. Other safety precautions will be in place.

“Anyone coming should plan to remain in their vehicle and let us unload for them. It will not only keep everyone safer, it also keeps the line moving quickly. We’ll also work to practice social distancing and utilize face coverings.”

If the weather is not cooperative, a new route will be well marked for those coming to drop off materials.

All HHW (chemicals, auto fluids, fluorescent bulbs, batteries, pesticides, herbicides, medicines, sharps, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, etc.) is accepted from households free of charge.

Other quick tips:

  1. Don’t bring latex paint—dry it up and throw it out.
  2. Document shredding will not be available
  3. Heavy trash items like furniture, lumber, mattresses, etc. will not be accepted
