Danville observes Red Ribbon Week

By Peg McRoy Glover

Mike Neilsen, Danville Town Council president, read a proclamation for Red Ribbon Week at the council meeting on Oct. 7. The proclamation is a campaign established by Congress in 1988 to encourage a drug-free lifestyle and designated October 20-26, National Red Ribbon Week.

The red ribbon was chosen to represent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a drug enforcement agent killed in the line of duty. This proclamation by the council is an encouragement for all citizens to wear a red ribbon in observance.

Keith Gurley accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Hendricks County Young Marines, a national community service organization for all youth ages eight through high school.

Gurley said, “Drugs are a problem in every community. Every year we (Hendricks County Young Marines) go town to town because promoting a drug-free life is one of the things we do.”
