Brownsburg East Middle School boys track team wins state title

By Lindsay Doty

The Brownsburg Middle School boys track & field team were all smiles after taking the state title at the Indiana Middle School Track and Field State Championships on May 18 in Terre Haute.

The team competed with 45 other Indiana schools and ended up with an overall score of 85. That’s nearly twice as much as the second place score of 43 from West Lafayette.

“Winning State to me meant everything, because I knew how much it meant to my guys, which made it that much more special,” Brownsburg East Head Track Coach Everett Blackmon IV said. “Our motto for the entire season was #UnfinishedBusiness, we finished second in both County and Conference in the 2018 track season so we knew we were knocking at the door of making school history. We just had to work twice as hard this season if we wanted to live out these goals.”

Blackmon says this group had the talent and practiced hard all season to get to this point.

Zemonda Wilson took first place in the 200 meter-race with a time of 23.64. Scotty Tienda and Justin Petty placed 4th and 5th in the 400-meter men’s race. Jalen Larkyecame came in 5th in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:11:55. Robert Jackson III jumped into first place in the men’s 200m hurdles. In relays,  The 4 x 100-meter team of Caleb Heldman, Ryan Miller, Robert Jackson III, and Zemonda Wilson took first place with a time of 46.12.
