Bainbridge woman dies in fatal crash

Staff Report

A Bainbridge woman was killed in a three-car crash on March 23 at approximately 1:18 p.m. at the intersection of US 36 and SR 75. Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department identified the woman as

Jennifer Backus, 47, of Bainbridge. According to HCSD, Backus had stopped in the northbound lane of SR 75 at the stop sign.  Backus then, for an unknown reason, proceeded northbound into the intersection in front of an eastbound Peter-Built semi-tractor and trailer.

The semi was unable to avoid striking the Ford pick-up truck that Backus was driving.  After impact, the momentum of the vehicles carried them eastbound into the front of another vehicle (tri-axle dump truck) which was stopped in the westbound lane of US 36.

There were no additional injuries reported during the crash.  Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in this collision, and reconstructionists from HCSD are continuing to investigate.
