Avon HS teacher selected for environmental award

Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District has selected Lisa Kern for its Environmental Education Award.

Kern, an environmental science teacher at Avon High School has taught at AHS since 2002.

During that time, she has lead classes ranging from anatomy and physiology to AP rnvironmental science.

She also serves as a sponsor for the high school Eco Club.

“She exemplifies high-quality environmental education in both her personal and professional life,” Amy Sieferman, outreach coordinator for the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District, said. “As a classroom teacher, Mrs. Kerns utilizes practical application of the concepts taught in the classroom. Her students can be found creating gardens and volunteering along with classroom studying. Her influence stretches out into the community, as well, where she organizes regular litter clean-up events within Hendricks County. Environmentalism is a verb and Mrs. Kern lives it every day.”

To celebrate, the Solid Waste Management District treated the entire AHS Science Department to a coffee and smoothie bar.

Kern was presented with a certificate with a polished marble apple.

The Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District is dedicated to promoting recycling, waste reduction and responsible waste management within Hendricks County.
