Accused driver charged with two counts of reckless homicide admitted to snorting heroin; left scene of hit-and-run earlier in the day

Staff Report

A probable cause affidavit released by the Avon Police Department this afternoon (Sept. 4) revealed that Danny Lee Williams – charged with two counts of reckless homicide in connection with the 11-vehicle accident, which resulted in a double fatality Tuesday – was involved in hit-and-run earlier in the day at Dan Jones Rd. and US Hwy. 36 and also admitted to police he had snorted heroin.

The affidavit states that the North American Construction dump truck, which Williams was driving, was involved in a hitandrun at the intersection of US Hwy. 36 and Dan Jones Rd. at approximately 12:39 p.m., roughly three hours before the double fatality occurred.

The affidavit also revealed that at the scene, Williams failed horizontal gaze nystagmus test. He voluntarily submitted to blood draw and was transported to Hendricks Regional Health, Danville. After the blood draw, Williams admitted to police who administered a full Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE) that he had snorted heroin earlier in the day. Officers observed white powdery substance present in his nasal cavity.

Gerald Edward Legan and his wife, Rhonda Lee, both 80, died at the scene. This is a developing story.
