Monday afternoon storms caused a total collapse of a partially-constructed commercial building in Brownsburg.

Brownsburg Fire Territory responded to a call at 3:48 this afternoon of reports of a person trapped in the structure at 7110 E. Northfield Dr. Since the building was not complete, the address was an estimation.

Territory Deputy Chief of Operations, Ryan Miller said the building was to be a gas station with spaces for additional retailers located south of town, at the corner of Northfield Drive and State Road 267.

“The building was framed and they were setting the rafters on top of the building,” Miller said. “We suspect that it was caused by storms cause it happened right when the storm was getting into town.”

Four people were sent to Indianapolis hospitals. Miller was unsure if the victims were all construction workers.

“We transported two to Eskenazi (hospital), one to Methodist (hospital) and one to Riley hospital,” Miller said. “That’s why I can’t say for sure if they were workers or not. He was of the age where he could’ve been, but I can’t say for certain.”

Miller said the Territory does not investigate the cause of building collapse and suggest it may be investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA.

Fire departments from Avon, Danville and Plainfield responded also.
